If you haven't yet heard of the Subaru Impreza WRX, you're reading the wrong magazine. Close your eyes while driving the WRX --and it isn't difficult to imagine yourself behind the wheel of a WRC car, rocketing down some twisty gravel road. The muscular boxer engine's rumble, the turbocharger's blow-off valve, and differential whine as power is routed through all four wheels just add to the primal sensation. For years, the turbocharged hot rod was sold in Europe and Japan but not in the US. Then when Subaru unveiled its new Impreza, the WRX version was finally offered to U.S. customers. Only 86,155 miles! With 2.5-liter turbocharged & intercooled DOHC 16-valve flat-4, aluminum block and heads, port fuel injection, F4 had its power boosted to 265 hp and 244 lb-ft of torque, the WRX can sprint turn for turn, automatic transmission, zero to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds and zero to 100 mph 13.0 seconds, top speed, 19 mpg city and 25 mpg highway. The steering is quick and accurate, body colored front and rear bumpers, aero composite halogen headlamps. Driver and passenger front impact airbags, seat mounted driver and passenger side impact airbags, side impact bars. Tilt leather steering wheel, turbo boost gauge, metal look instrument panel insert, the gauges are black with white markings, red needles and raised silver rings. The front seat has enough head room and leg room for tall drivers, and visibility is good to all corners soft, woven fabric, double stitched cloth. There's enough side bolstering top and bottom to keep occupants snug during fairly aggressive driving, but there's also plenty of give in the cushions. Center console features two cup holders and a deep center console. The back seat is impressive for a compact car, with enough leg room for tall passengers provided the front seats aren't set too far back. Front center armrest, intermittent wipers, power windows, power locks, dual power mirrors, cruise control, Factory seek-scan Am/Fm/Eq/Mp3/Aux CD stereo, premium cloth front and rear seat upholstery, tinted windows, rear seats are split 60/40 and they fold flat easily via pull up knobs. Suspension tuning strikes a comfortable balance between rally ready and family friendly. High strength steel at suspension mounting points and key structural joints, four wheel disc brakes, four wheel ABS brakes, manually adjustable all-wheel-drive system. All-wheel drive adds handling stability and traction on slippery roads, makes the most of available traction on all surfaces, from grippy to gravel, spare tire mounted inside under cargo, factory rear spoiler. To plant all that power, Subaru utilizes a Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD) system, which claims to be the world's only hybrid mechanical/electronic limited-slip differential.
