2023 Subaru Legacy Review

If I was to buy a Subaru, it wouldn’t be this one. The Forester Wilderness is the best car in its lineup. But last year 22,000 people disagreed with me and nabbed themselves one of these all-wheel drive sedans, priced from between $25,000 and $39,000 with 5 trims offered. It used to be that Subaru owned the all-wheel drive midsize sedan segment but then Toyota built an all-wheel drive Camry and Nissan an all-wheel drive Altima and that advantage faded. Honda’s the only outlier now.
This Touring XT is the crème de la crème of the Legacy trims with a turbo and all of the goodies Subaru offers for an as-tested price of $38,715. The Cosmic Blue Pearl is a distinctive paint choice, the front end flaunts revised styling to give it some visual pop, the Java Brown Nappa Leather classes things up, the Harman Kardon stereo has big, rich sound and Starlink packs wireless phone projection into its solid infotainment system…it’s one of the better units on the market. With its 15 cubic foot trunk and spacious interior, the Legacy is technically classified as a large car. It takes regular unleaded and nets 26 mpg and 481 miles of range from its 2.4-liter Boxer powerplant, a name derived from the engine’s 4 horizontally opposed pistons which give it a low center of gravity and facilitate Subaru’s legendary symmetrical all-wheel drive system.
Akin to Volvo, Subaru is very safety forward and the 2023 Legacy introduces a new element to its arsenal. The EyeSight dual camera system has been employed in its cars for years for functions such as pre-collision braking, lane departure and cruise control but now there’s a third camera to expand its capabilities.
(Stand-up)
Some of these items can be disabled, some of them can’t…at least not easily and while I’m all for safety this kind of in your face approach isn’t for me.
The Legacy’s turbo outputs 260 horsepower and a healthy 277 pound-feet of torque distributed through a CVT and front to rear and side to side all-wheel drive system known as torque vectoring. There are paddle shifters that replicate 8 actual gears but the Limited doesn’t stock the Sport model’s SI-Drive Modes so this Legacy is only programmed for one style: relaxed. It’s not a very compelling drive and it doesn’t stand out in particular way other than its ability to find traction. I’ll give it this = I’m comfortable in the driver’s seat, it’s heated three ways and ventilated, there’s a heated steering wheel, and stellar touchscreen. But the drive is middling, the engine start/stop system is gruff, and no one gets all warm and fuzzy over the sounds of a CVT. The ride quality is soft but lacks sophistication.
I love the off-screen camera activation button, but it’s only a front view – not 360, there’s wireless phone projection but no wireless charge pad or a good place to stow a modern-sized phone and get this, there’s a CD player in the center console! The old fart in me kind of appreciates that.
There are heated rear seats, some divided storage in the seat backs and plenty of room for 2 more.. The hump in the floor essentially keeps it a 4-seater.
The Legacy’s complete redesign is still a couple of years away, until then this one’s appeal lies mostly with the dog-loving, hiking crowd.
