If you’ve ever been to Vermont then you know how popular the Toyota Prius is in green country. But with the exception of about 3 months, snow can fly at any time. So in comes the 2019 Prius now available with all-wheel drive for Vermonters or anywhere road conditions get a little tricky. And of course there are no driveshafts or differentials to add weight. Nope, this all-wheel drive system is electric using a single motor generating 7hp and 40 pound-feet of torque to power the rear wheels at takeoff and then again, as needed, up to 43mph. Otherwise, the Hybrid drive system remains the same, combining the output of a 1.8-liter gas engine and 2 motor/generators to deliver 121 horsepower working through an electronic continuously variable transmission.
